Angelwalk Theatre was founded in February 2009 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization on June 10, 2009. A proud member of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, Angelwalk Theatre is a professional theatre company dedicated to producing artistically exciting theatrical works, with a special focus on musical theatre. The company presents two shows annually as a resident company in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, and is committed to providing opportunities for both emerging and established Canadian theatre professionals.

In its inaugural season, Angelwalk Theatre presented the Toronto premiere of Altar Boyz (September 23, 2009 until October 11, 2009; extended until October 18, 2009 due to popular demand) and Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years (May 7-23, 2010). Both productions were well received, with Altar Boyz being nominated for 3 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. Richard Ouzounian of the Toronto Star wrote that Angelwalk’s production of Altar Boyz was “worthy of beatification, if not outright canonization,” while Mark Andrew Lawrence of Inside Toronto wrote that The Last Five Years was “the best production of The Last Five Years that I have ever seen.”Altar Boyz was later remounted at the Victoria Playhouse Petrolia from June 30, 2010 until July 10, 2010.

In 2010-2011, Angelwalk Theatre produced another Toronto premiere, 2009 Tony Award nominee for Best Book, [title of show] (September 22, 2010 until October 9, 2010), and Tony-Award winning composer Jason Robert Brown’s first musical, Songs for a New World (March 30, 2011 until April 23, 2011). Audience response to both shows was strong and [title of show] was nominated for 5 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding Production of a Musical. Referring to [title of show], Glen Sumi of NOW Magazine commented, “there’s not a weak link in the cast” while Richard Ouzounian from the Toronto Star said that “it’s not a great big show, but it’s a really good one.” In his review of Songs for a New World, Inside Toronto’s Mark Andrew Lawrence wrote “this show has it all: powerful songs presented by a committed cast who deliver the goosebumps that make live theatre a religious experience.”

“Kudos to Angelwalk Theatre, who mounted the terrific Altar Boyz last season and seem committed
to bringing fresh, intelligent mid-sized musicals to the city.”

-Glen Sumi, NOW Magazine

Angelwalk Theatre distinguishes itself in the Toronto musical theatre scene by being producers rather than presenters, focusing on quality mid-sized musical theatre and working towards developing an ‘Off-Broadway’ community in Toronto. The company prides itself on providing employment to Canadian artists at all levels – performers, directors, designers, technicians and production staff.
